Befere & After-School Care

Before-School Care is available to Lower School students (Pre-K-Grade 5) from 7:30 to 8:00 a.m. on a drop-in basis. Before school care for Upper School students (Grades 6-8) is available at the Upper School from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. by prior arrangment only.

After-School Care is available Monday through Friday, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Students who regularly attend after-school will be checked in immediately after school lets out for the day; for safety, students who are not picked up at dismissal time will be automatically signed in to after-school care. After-School is held at the Lower School campus. A staff member will escort Upper School students to the Lower School campus; parents should pick them up there.

There are a few days on which after-school care is not offered, including early dismissal days and some special event days. These days are marked on the school calendar.

After-School is supervised by regular Old Orchard staff members, not outside vendors. At least two staff members are on duty at all times and all are trained in CPR and other emergency procedures.

The typical After-School session includes the following:

  • 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.: Supervised free play; depending on student interest, supervisors may lead games or simply oversee them.
  • 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.: Study Hall for older students in a separate classroom; older students may also read quietly if they have no homework. Younger students may play indoor games, read books, work on art projects or play outside on our smaller playground.
  • 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.: Quiet activities, indoors or out, for all students. Older students may continue to work on homework.
  • Fridays: After free-play, students are allowed to watch a G-Rated movie.

Please be sure to pick you child up no later than 6 p.m. We do our best to keep after-school rates as reasonable as possible, but we are obliged to charge hefty late fees because we require at least two staff members to remain on site until the last child is picked up. This is a necessary, but costly safety measure.

Before-School Care

Before-School Care is available at the Upper School for Upper School students by arrangement only-- there is no drop-in care.  Before-School care is from 7:30 a.m to 7:45 a.m., when homeroom teachers arrive.  A staff member will supervise students before their homeroom teachers arrive.  Please contact the Upper School office for more information or to sign up for the program.

Summer at Old Orchard

Old Orchard hosts a Summer Day Camp and a variety of specialy workshops each summer. All programs are led by regular Old Orchard staff members. All programs are open to Old Orchard students, their friends and family members. Most programs are open to outside students, as well. Outside students must be at least five years old.

Day camp is a mix of visual art, performing arts, creative play, goofy games, mad science projects and outings to local attractions. It is geared largely, but not exclusively towards younger students and is open to Old Orchard students and non-Old Orchard students alike. Sessions are week-long and students may enroll in full or half-day programs.

Workshops range from Math Camp to Making Movies, Rock Band Camp, Creative Writing, Bookmaking and more. The are weeklong programs led by specialty teachers; some are all-day, others are half-day.

Information on and registration materials for our 2010 Summer Camp programs will be available in January 2010. If you would like us to contact you with more information then, please send an email to Camp Director Melissa Greene. If you have a suggestion for Day Camp or a workshop subject to suggest, please share them with her as well.
