Social Emotional Learning

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is woven into the everyday fabric of Old Orchard School. We realize that students can only do their best academically when they are feeling their best socially and emotionally. To that end, SEL at Old Orchard is both proactive and responsive. All adults on campus work to form supportive relationships with students, in the hope that each child has several people they feel comfortable reaching out to for reassurance or assistance in advocacy. SEL curriculums and lessons have been chosen to give our students the tools they need to address the challenges that are typically experienced by those in their age group. Teachers also provide whole class, small group, and individual support to work through needs that come up over the course of the school day and school year. We consider Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Relationship Skills, Social Awareness, and Responsible Decision-Making as skills that can be taught and practiced, much like any academic topic we would cover with the children in our care.
