GR4 Archaeology Dig
Posted 07/02/2018 12:00PM

As the grand finale of their first California History unit, GR4 students spend three days working on a simulated archeological dig, excavating artifacts from the state's Native American and Victorian past. Known as a "sim dig" to archeology students of all ages, this lab allows students to develop a greater understanding of a critical method historians use to learn about the past. Students will learn proper techniques - from how to dig to processing artifacts - and its importance in preserving the information historic artifacts have to share with the present, as well as the ethical considerations attached to all digs. This is a great, annual event developed by teacher Sarah McGillivray, based on her many stints chaperoning our 8th Grade on its annual trip to the Crow Canyon Archeological Center, and additional studies at the Center, funded by a competitive National Endowment for the Humanities Grant.
