Upper School Students Bring Home Honors from Theater Festival
Posted 03/03/2019 01:08PM
Mia & Jayden with their awards from the Middle School Theater FestDuring Mid-Winter Break, Drama Teacher Flo Galvez and Upper School students Jayden Brown and Mia Jones headed California Educational Theater Association's (CETA) Middle Stage Fest, where the 6thGraders reprised a two-person "Duo Scene" from their recent production of The Outsiders, and individual monologues. They did very well, especially since it was Old Orchard's first (but not last) outing to the competition. They performed the rumble scene from The Outsiders in which, as heads of the rival Greasers and Socials, Darry (Mia) and Paul (Jayden) face off, remembering their high school football days before the punches begin to fly. Mia also performed a monologue from The Outsiders, and Jayden delivered a monologue from an earlier school production, Because of Winn Dixie.

More than 245 Middle School theater buffs entered the competition from across the state. At the awards ceremony, Mia and Jayden received Excellence in Artistry certificates for their Duo Scene. Mia received Excellence in Artistry for her Outsidersmonologue, and Jayden received a Silver Medal for her Because Of Winn-Dixiemonologue. Their awards also qualify them to continue on to the Youth In Theater Day Celebration in Sacramento later this year.

During breaks in the competition, the Mia and Jayden also participated in lively workshops led by theater teachers, where they had the opportunity to engage in all kinds of activities with theater buffs from other school. It was a great day, and hearty congratulations to both Upper School students and to Drama Teacher Flo Galvez.
